I’ve only mentioned it briefly, but I’ve said that I’ll be taking a break from my SetsuAyu series - mainly because of my uni workload though.

But for now, I have a lot of thoughts about the entire thing as a project as well as myself as an artist. So I figured that I’d write a reflection of sorts (warning: it gets kind of personal).

Can you believe it’s been 3-4 months since the series started? I can’t, and I’ve been the one drawing all of these!! If you’ve been reading my work, I’ll say it over and over but I really appreciate it!!! Like I’m dead serious!!! Completely!! Utterly!! Without a doubt!!! I love all of you!!!

When I posted that first comic, I didn’t think it’d get the positive reception that it did get. Like, I’ve been producing basically entirely Muse content for years and suddenly decided to tap into Nijigaku? You could argue that it didn’t get that much attention, but either way, the attention it did get surprised me. I was so happy that people were engaged (and it still makes me stupidly happy, like on a level where I’m almost embarrassed to admit HAHA)

Recently I’ve just uploaded the bonus for the 3rd update which wraps up that part, and it really just clicked - that I really have invested soooo much time into this series. 36 pages now! And we’re only 3/10 main updates in!! I have so much passion for this - like a fire that can’t be put out. Every single update has something that I want to communicate/show so I always feel fired up. Heck, if you’ve spoken to me during the process you’d catch me always saying “I’m excited for the next one!!!” while working on it LMAO. It’s been my longest string of non-stop work. Usually I feel burned out more quickly but I was always so excited that I couldn’t stop! You’d find that I’m usually in a  state of conflict bc I alwaaaays want to talk about it but at the same time I don’t want to spoil anything. (THE NEXT UPDATE JUICY)

I think it’s a clear reminder of why I draw actually. The answer between each artist always differs, but I think it’s something important to be aware of. And well, for me? I’ve realised I’m a passion-monster. Passion keeps my blood pumping 100%. As a result... you could say I might be a more selfish kind of artist. Maybe it’s burn-out from running all those ask-blogs/RP when I was like 13-16, but I’ve realised that I’m having the most fun drawing what I genuinely love. It’s kind of why you’d rarely see me do requests and why I no longer do commissions. That isn’t to say that I hate drawing for other people. It can be fulfilling! But it’s more like - I barely have the time to draw for myself, so drawing for others is kind of a lower priority in general. It’s also why I’ve decided against studying graphic design when I graduated highschool. It’s just not happening as a career.

When I ask myself, “what kind of artist do I want to be?” I always think “Somebody who marches to her own beat and works hard to make content that she loves.” It’s also why I never delete anything - even my oldest art that makes me cringe. Because the me from 5 years ago put her love into that too. It’s really cheesy sounding but that’s how I see it LMFAO. I couldn’t do that to her. And also, just because I don’t like something anymore, it doesn’t mean that no one else does. So I’ll continue to never delete my old work. As a bonus, we get to see how far I’ve come too~.

I feel a little vulnerable admitting something like this and I’m pretty sure I’ve only told like 4 humans, but I think my #1 goal as an artist is that I want people to be able to look at my work (that I actually put my heart into) and think “this person loves this” or “this person works hard”. If you can do that, and sincerely feel the feelings I put into my comic, then I’ve already reached my goal. Can people tell how much I love these characters? The series? The concept? Can people tell how much work I’ve been putting into these updates? Can people tell when I’m having fun? It’s something I think about a lot. The idea of that people might think so makes me tear up HAHA - I get really sappy thinking about these kinds of things. And well, if people can’t tell then I’m not working hard enough!

That isn’t to say that I’m always putting my life-blood into everything I make. I’m mainly referring to the stuff where I do. I think it’s pretty clear when I’m pumping a lot of love into something. In general though, there��s always an intention for me to like communicate some idea or feeling and doing something like that requires maybe a bit of love~.

I feel like that as a character, Setsuna really resonates with me a lot. In personality? Not at all LMFAOOOO (she’s such a nice girl!!). More because of her ideals and principles. After typing like everything that I did up until this point, I bet you can guess why. I’ll keep it short and simple though, since this post is getting stupidly long.

Basically, I really resonate with her drive and passion as both an artist, and just in general actually? I’m a believer in that if you’re passionate about something, you can spread that passion. That’s the mentality I have with my art. If my love shows, then maybe other people will understand why I’ve come to love something. And maybe they’ll come to love it too. If I’m having fun, maybe they will have fun too! Very cheesy, I know, but that’s just how I roll!!!

Like rare pair? New fandom? Still applies. It might take awhile, but eventually either the people who love that thing will find me, or I’ll help people come to love something new (or at least see where it’s coming from lolol)!

Of course I know this is idealistic, but I think that’s fine. It’s no bother to me if someone feels indifferent/ negative towards my work because that’s just natural.

I think it’s a form of communication and that’s what drives my art. I’ve been intending on writing a guide/ or talking about my art process for comics for some time now and I think that’d be the first thing I’d mention? I’m always trying to communicate some sort of feeling/tone/idea and that comes from a place of love y’know.

I feel like I’m saying “love” and “passion” a lot - you can really tell I’m vibing with Setsuna huh LMAO. There are other reasons I vibe with her too, but I won’t touch on that.

Coming back to my SetsuAyu series. You can tell why I’m so happy about it right? The story, the pairing dynamic, I feel like that people are understanding what I’m trying to communicate - that people are receiving my feelings of love for it and that makes me smile so widely. I really put a lot into it!!

This series is the first large project I’ve ever taken you see and I’m so so happy that I’ve been able to get this far! It really means a lot to me. But it wasn’t actually the first comic series I’ve tried to do. I actually had a Muse long-running comic planned years ago - a Dancing Stars on Me! AU but it never came to life. I think it was my lack of confidence that held me back. It might be weird of me to pat myself on the back, but I’m proud that I managed to get going this time!! I’ve actually written the SetsuAyu series in a way that for the first half, I could drop the series if I really wanted to at any point (each part is pretty independent, and that description I always copy-and-paste is all the explanation you really need), but now I know for sure that I don’t want to drop it! I wanna keep going!! Even if it gets tough. Although it might be a little early for me to make such bold declarations, I’m only 3/10 through LOOOL. But that’s just the way I feel right now!

I know it’s irrational and it’s something I’d rather not admit, but an anxiety that’s always looming over me is the idea that I’m not working hard enough - or that people think I’m not? Each comic update...takes like a month right? And a month is a long time. There’s this part of me that is convinced that people think I’m lazy for working so slowly. And I know it’s not true!! It doesn’t make sense for it to be!!! But like I said it’s irrational.

I’m really proud of this comic y’know. It’s a really big commitment and I’m proud of myself for being able to commit. I work full time 9-5, and I also am in my final year at university. I’m... kind of busy lol. So the huge factor in that month-long update turnaround is just that I don’t have the time to always be drawing. But I try to draw as much as I can! If you have me on discord you might notice me work on it for like 2-5 hours, almost daily before I go to bed (1am). Of course I’m not only drawing, but after I get everything plotted out sometimes that’s all I do. This comic is super time-consuming LMAO - and I try my best to work on it a little at a time.

So yeah, the entire month of comic-production is me drawing every almost every night.

Yeah it, - it’s kind of exhausting. Even though I’m itching to work on my next update, I’ve decided to take a break for uni crunch which is why I say the next one might be two months. It’s really odd though. The other night I was in bed feeling restless. It was so weird not drawing till 1am that I felt like I needed to be doing something. This comic series might have weird effects on my habits...

It makes me anxious thinking that it’d be so long till next update. But I’ll do my best to push that aside ! Hopefully I can get uni done and dusted ASAP! I want them to date dammit...

I've decided that I want to see this series through to the end. It’ll probably be May next year when that happens though LMAO! Please bear with my slow turnaround time. It’s only been 3 updates, but I can already see that I’m improving with each one. With each update I feel like I really learn from the previous and I always feel this sense of excitement with trying out new techniques and trying to create different feelings. I really want to see how the last updates will look compared to the first!  Technically we’re 3/10 (10 is an epilogue), but after 6 I actually stop doing bonuses? So teeechnically I’m like 40% of the way through~.

It might be a little over-ambitious, but I kind of want to print it out and make a hard-copy when I’m done. I’m not sure about what the demand would be if I were to sell it, but I definitely want to print it for myself first and foremost (after touching up the earlier updates of course LOL). It’d be like a physical representation of my achievement. I hope I can make it there.

Anyways, I’ve rambled for far too long. I’m not sure why I suddenly felt like talking about uh, everything but yeaaaah. If you’ve read this far, kudos to you! You now have a window into my soul that I’m still not sure if I’m comfortable with revealing (but I’m comfortable enough because I’m posting this so...)! 

After reading all of this, can you tell why I always get so so happy after each update? It’s the fruition of what’s usually 2-3 weeks of non-stop hard work! Seeing people connect with it always sends me to another realm of bliss and I always feel soft like putty LOL.

What are hetalia canon things that you ignore?

I ignore the weird noises the anime/manga portrays like ‘honhon’, ‘kolkolkol’, ‘pastaaaaa’ and ‘aru’. I don’t find it realistic or funny so I just...Never write these things. Unless it’s in a mocking manner ;)

Purple eyes! That isn’t realistic so in my hc, Ivan has blue eyes and so does Matthew. Ivan’s are light and Matthew’s are the same blue as Francis’s eyes because he inherited them through influence the same way Alfred did

I tend to ignore Italy’s canon personality altogether. Feli is...old...And smart...And seeing him portrayed as a total idiot makes me cringe lmao

1) How old were you when you first starting writing fanfiction?

It was more than half my lifetime ago—I was 10!

5) If you had to choose a favourite out of all of your multi chaptered stories, which would it be and why?

I only have a couple, lol, but I’d have to say We Are an Ocean. I’m not sure if I love it or hate it at this point, but I’ve put so so so so much effort and time and love into it! It’s my baby! 

11) Have you ever amended a story due to criticisms you’ve received after posting it?

Not on major plot points, but... About ten years ago, I wrote a oneshot based in the late 1940s, and someone pointed out to me that seatbelts in cars weren’t really a thing back then. I did go back and change that, lmao. Fly free, kiddos, you’re on your own in a car crash! 

14) How did you come up with the title for We Are an Ocean? 

I HAD SUCH A HARD TIME WITH IT. I knew I wanted it to be friends-with-benefits turned lovers turned partners in every aspect, but the gradual change there over the course of the story makes it hard to choose a single theme... and I almost always name my fics based on theme! I literally spent two days scouring quotes in about twenty different themes, and finally found the quote I used and decided it was good enough. It was defeatism more than anything, lmao! Here’s the whole quote from which I got the title of the fic: "Individually, we are one drop. Together, we are an ocean." -Ryunosuke Satoro. 

17) Post a line from a WIP that you’re working on. (I cheated and did three from my ‘oui oui oui plus baguette’ story, as you put it, lmao.)

“Où sont lez… what was it, again?”

“Forget it. Stay close to me and avoid getting lost, because I do not think you will never be able to speak French, Tony DiNozzo.”

18) Do you have any abandoned WIP’s? What made you abandon them?

I have one! It’s a long and sordid tale of heartbreak and drama, lmao, so I’ll spare you the details, but basically, I co-wrote it with someone I was very close to. When we had a falling out, I rewrote much of the story for my own sanity but didn’t post it—it was just for me. Eventually, when I’d gotten whatever closure I needed out of it, I stopped doing that, too. The story still exists somewhere in the format of text messages on an old phone shoved in a drawer somewhere, but what was posted back when that person and I were still close is all that will ever be published. (I did get a tattoo because of the whole experience of rewriting by myself, though... song lyrics from Hamilton! “I picked up a pen; I wrote my own deliverance.”)

22) Do you have a story that you look back on and cringe when you reread it?

SO MANY. Actually, I keep meaning to go back and delete pretty much everything I wrote prior to 2019, lmao. Thanks for the reminder! 

25) Have you ever cried whilst writing a story?

YES. As you know, I’m an incredibly easy crier. I usually don’t, though... I like to say that I hurt my own feelings instead. When I’m writing, I’m usually so focused on the forest that the trees can’t make me cry, lmao. There’s so much going on in my head—plot, dialogue, word count, staying IC, timing, descriptions, continuity, throwing in pianos to piss you off, pacing, grammar, keeping track of clothes if I’m writing smut, etc. It makes me a little removed from my story until I give it a read-through when I publish it. Once, though, during my RP days... my partner and I were writing a story that I KNEW would make me cry but I still wrote it when I was in public. I was on a long-distance overnight bus from London to Amsterdam with 100 strangers and there were NO TISSUES. I got snot all over myself. Gross. 10/10, would recommend embarrassing yourself that badly in the name of art at least once in your life!

36) Can you give us a spoiler for one of your WIP’s?

Sure, I’ll give you a few! For WAAO, spoilers with no context: guilt/grief/fear/rage all wrapped up in one devastated character, the worst international trip in the world, a therapist, Anacostia Park, and a baby that wants to be passed from person to person every 90 seconds. 

49) Can you remember the first fic you read? What was it about?

I can, lmao, cause I’m scarred for life. I was roughly 8 years old and even back then, I was very shippy... I was looking for a Harry/Ginny story to read. The one I found involved Harry cheating on his wife with Cho Chang and in the end, Ginny got pissed enough that she straight up murdered him. Wtf. I’m still not okay. 

50) If you could write only angst, fluff or smut for the rest of your writing life, which would it be and why?

WAIT THIS ONE’S HARD. WTF SOFIA. Ummmmmmmmm... shit. I guess I’m going to go with fluff, because angst is no fun if it doesn’t resolve into fluff anyway, and it’s hard enough to write the occasional smut fic without it being the only thing I’m allowed to write! Yeah, okay, my final answer is fluff. But I don’t like it and you’re on thin ice for asking this question, lmao.

I try to! I’ve gotten worse at that lately, though. Like, I get in a cycle sometimes where I feel bad for not replying to every comment, and then that makes replying to the backlog of comments even more daunting. I love getting comments, though, and I love replying to comments too, it’s so much fun interacting with my readers, and mutually inspiring each other (and so I really don’t get why it also can feel so hard to do sometimes lol).

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

This question was hard last time I answered it because I didn’t have many fics with angsty enough endings to qualify, but now I’ve been on a whumpier kick and I have too many to choose from. XD

Like… Hmm. A Professional Interest and nightmare are both very much hurt/no comfort, but they are told from the POV of the one doing the hurting, so maybe not those bc that feels like a different category?

I think my answer has to be the world will never take my heart. That fic is about “heroic” self-sacrificing behaviors being functionally no different from self-destructive ones, and showing the capacity for this kind of self-destructive selflessness in both Garak and Bashir. And then, instead of either of them improving at all in this regard, the fic ends with them each doubling down on their self-sacrificial tendencies. <3 To me that makes for a very deliciously bleak ending (even though the circumstances they’re in are temporary).

7. What is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

the next thirty, because it’s set 30 years after Garak and Julian’s first meeting, and it’s about how they are still just as in love (and in lust) with each other as ever. Old, married Garashir, my beloved!!! <3

8. Do you get hate on fics?

Nope! (Well, not since the dark days of well-meaning - but nevertheless devastating - “concrit” on ff.net.)

9. Do you write smut?

HELL YEAH!!!! ^_^ <3 Over 50% of my fics now are E- or M-rated, hehehehe. I feel like this is a big change from the last time I answered this question, which was BEFORE I’d specifically worked on developing my smut writing skills because I NEEDED so, I lied, I cheated to contain sex scenes that I personally would actually want to reread. XD

10. Craziest crossover

I don’t have any crossover fics on ao3 and tbh I’m unwilling to talk about the cringe that’s on my teenaged ff.net account (as in the account itself is old enough to be a teenager, AND as in I was a teen back when I was posting there lmao). But I did have one crossover fic there (under a different username. this was so long ago). You’ll just have to imagine it, I guess.

Nope. People are welcome to translate or podfic my fics! :)

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Hmmm. Sort of? I have sort of co-written two fics (The Inherent Homoeroticism of Citizenship Paperwork and Whisper a Dangerous Secret) where sapphose threw out a small snippet on tumblr and then, with permission, I took it and ran with it because I felt compelled to expand upon the idea. I also wrote a follow up (Honesty Cums Easy) to one of @cemetrygatess' fics (You Make My Dreams (Cum True)), and I'm working on a fic set within the universe of one of dreamerdrop's series (Abscess 'Verse).... But does any of that count as co-writing? XD

I also wrote an installment in a round robin one time. (I’ve also done a round robin in DMs with some friends for funsies, but then I was the one who accidentally killed that by never writing the next part of it. 😭) Again, is that co-writing?

I’ve also made specific plans to co-author some fics before, but that’s never quite worked out. I think I agree to these collabs easily and enthusiastically, but then when it comes down to working on them I get too self-critical of my own writing (or of my own writing SCHEDULE, which is chaos and nonsense bc I am fully beholden to the whims of adhd lol), and I don’t want to let my potential co-authors down, and then it fizzles. So yeah, seems like I am more successful with ambushing other people’s fics with continuations than with co-writing in other ways??? XD Maybe/hopefully that will change someday?

15. What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I really don’t like this question. I started drafting a reply to this set of questions back in May this year, and my response to this question was about how I felt despair that I will likely never ever finish my soulmate wip..... which is currently, in December, the WIP that I am feeling the most excited about and closest to posting. So like what the fuck ever, I refuse to take part in predicting my own failure!!!! Things just take time! lol

16. What are your writing strengths?

Exploring interesting character dynamics. Plotting a fic out. Creating tension. Writing weird alien smut, maybe? Writing utterly ridiculous premises with juuuust enough nods to canon that people are like “ohhhh this is insane but you somehow made it believable???” ^_^ Or maybe these are just all the things I want to be good at.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Dialogue (I have def been improving at it, but making conversations flow well and seem realistic and actually sound like the characters is still def the hardest part of writing for me). Coming up with titles. Also, maintaining a consistent writing schedule/staying focused on a single WIP until it is done, hahahahahaha.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

My answer from last time (3 years ago) was “No thoughts, head empty, star trek brand Universal Translator on…” and yeah that still applies. TBH I mostly feel like this is an out of the blue question among the rest of this list??? My thoughts are it’s usually not necessary, but like obviously It Depends???????

19. Favorite fic you've written?

my answer from May: This changes on a frequent basis but right now I’m really feeling nothing to hide. The structure of interleaving flashbacks and a conversation about the events of the flashbacks worked just soooo well, it made the pacing so snappy. And also while writing it I felt like I’d unlocked a secret cheat code to writing dialogue because I didn’t need to connect all the dialogue up into one coherent block, I could just put a flashback whenever I couldn’t think what one of them would say next lmaoooooo, and it somehow worked SO WELL.

my answer from right now: you’re a criminal as long as you’re mine. Look, I just think Garak and Sisko should messily hook up in the early seasons, that’s all. ^_^ <3 I also really like thinking about what kinds of things Sisko asks of Garak and what Garak is willing to do for him and how early that all starts (like, Second Skin as a very distant precursor to ITPM).

20. What's something you want to write someday?

This is hard bc if I WANT to write it then I almost certainly have already made a wip document for it and STARTED writing it. XD I guess I really want to COMPLETE a multichapter garashir fic in the horror genre someday. (Come through for me, Sub Rosa sloanshir+garashir wip, aka “I Will Possess Your Heart” 🥰💕💖)

Hello! MY DUDE, I COULD TALK ABOUT HUSBANDOS ALL DAY, I just don’t know if people want that over art lmao. Also I don’t think most people following on this acc are in the E7 fandom, I could be wrong about both though :’D. Ok hotness mainly based on personality I’ll give you 8, ML and Nat.

1) Kayron. Of course it’s Kayron. This is based on personality. He knows what he wants and he’s stuck to it in all the worlds. He’s dedicated to his goals, he knows what he desires *wants to die* asdfghjksda. He’s very pessimistic, and I’m drawn to that. That unexpected glimpse into his tsundere side got me falling hard. 2) Vildred/Arbiter Vildred. His story is angsty, very angsty. He hurts my heart and makes me cry, but all the *what ifs* with him they make me cry even more— I meant to say they make me happy. A happy sad but relatively happy. Canon-wise, I sympathise with him greatly. He makes me find Ras less likeable. Somewhere in my heart I was probably rooting for Vildred in ending the world with Kayron and the other Acolytes. Regarding his voice actors, JP and KR I think he’s hot, super hot, but there’s a certain charm to his ENG lines. He sounds so.. awkward.. BUT IN A CUTE WAY!!! VILDRED IS CUTE!! HE’S A DORK TOO HAVE YOU HEARD HIS HORROR STORY CAMPING LINE IN ENGLISH ASDJHADAS!??! I LIKE DORKY BOYS. Arby though, no. Give me back my cute dork… :( I MISS THE CUTE VILDRED.

3) Rikoris/Captain Rikoris. RIKOCHAN MAKES A RETURN. YOU REMEMBER WHAT I WAS SAYING ABOUT DORKS? I LOVE THEM DUMBASSES. “POWER OF THE SPEAR; LIGHT AND JUSTICE; NOW YOU KNOW MY PASSION FOR SPEARS.” HEEHHEEHEE. I was laughing so hard at his appearances near the end of EP2. I’ll leave it at that, since I talked about him earlier.

4/5) Watcher Schuri & Sez. I can’t make a decision who to put next, but I like both of them for a similar reason. THEY’RE BOTH ALOOF AIRHEADS ASDFSDFSD. Sez is a bit more on the violent, impulsive side, but he really shines…esp next to Bellona. Makes me question if I ship SezVio or Sezlona, why not both AHAAHHAHA. Though I’m putting Watcher Schuri this high, it’s questionable if I’d put regular Schuri here as well. I like Schuri’s design just like how I like his ML version. I just.. it’s his personality.. I DON’T KNOW. I’M USUALLY NOT INTO THE FLAMBOYANT, OVERCONFIDENT TYPES. (Violet makes me cringe and facepalm even while knowing his backstory and why he’s like that.. he might be slowly growing on me through exposure though. I’m getting used to him.)

6) Kawerik. He’s finally appeared after a long year of waiting. He definitely climbed the ranks; he might still be climbing it. His story pulls at my heartstrings and I also cry for him like with Vildred. BUT AFTER WAITING FOR SO LONG HE WAS GONE AGAIN SO SOON ASKDJASJKDASKD. SG WHY YOU DO THIS. THEY KEPT TEASING KAWERIK TOO BRO. HE WAS RANDOMLY THERE IN THE EVENT SCREENS AND THEN HE WAS IN THE STORIES & SIDE STORIES SDASGJKL. I WAS LIKE STOP TEASING HIM COWARDS. GIVE HIM TO US. LEGIT WAITED SO LONG FOR HIM /INHALES.

7) Baal & Sezan/Sage Baal & Sezan. I find the Baal & Sezan duo very comedic. Baal S3, he just tosses his lady up and grabs her while she screams I’m like ASDJASDASD CRYING LAUGHING. My friend once asked me WHY ARE ALL UR OCS IN HIGHER/LOWER (servant master i guess?) RELATIONSHIPS and I’m like I DON’T KNOW WHY IT JUST APPEALS TO ME??? And this is pretty much Baal and Sezan.. Apprentice and Magician. I’d very much like to learn more about them and their journey to help return Sezan to a human body. SURE SOUNDS A LOT MORE INTERESTING THAT WHATEVER RAS IS DOING RIGHT NOW :’D.  Crossing my fingers waiting for the day to come. The way that Sage Baal is anxious for Baal and worries about Baal’s lady lacking a human body makes me sad because  perhaps she too, LIKE HIS LADY, would fade away never to move again… I headcanon that Sage Baal tells Baal and he’d better treasure his relationship with Sezan, return her to her human body soon— ELSE HE GON FUCK HIM UP WHEN SEZAN ENDS UP LIKE HIS OWN LADY. No one draws them :( *big brain I can draw them*

8) Cidd….maybe Dingo too…….Pretty much same as the previous. CIDD-DINGO RELATIONSHIP BE AKJDASDASD CRYING LAUGHING. I love the relationship Cidd and Dingo have. I ship it. Cidd is such a straight man in this comedy with Dingo. Dingo is just so random and bizzare? :’D Somehow Cidd has adapted to it and I find it cute that in the future when Dingo becomes Blaze Dingo, A NORMAL SOCIALLY ACCEPTABLE MAN, Cidd is losing his shit. LIKE IM SORRY DINGO, GO BACK TO THE WAY YOU WERE. THIS AINT IT BRO. THIS AINT IT. GIVE ME BACK THE OLD DINGO ASDASDKFDSF. I love them. LOOKS WISE, CIDD IS CUTE. BRO CIDD HE SUIN, HE.. Hello!!

So in light of Phil’s newest video (the Bob Ross Painting tutorial festive edition) I figured it would be fun to share some of the things I’ve learned when learning how to oil paint over the past year.

(Note: i swear I’m not trying to be mean I love Phil with my whole heart and I think he tried his very best. But that being said, I cringed the whole time I watched it because I couldn’t get over the tiny details of things he could’ve done differently to make the painting less of a happy accident)

Not in any particular order, but I’ve sectioned it into things petaining to supplies and technique.

Supplies:

1. Buy good paint thinner. Lots of it (I’ve spilt it on a rug, myself, a table, etc, and trust me that scent is HARD to remove)

2. Wear something you don’t care about to paint in. I have a sweatshirt specifically for oil painting days because I know I’m going to make a mess.

3. Invest in cheap paper towels or set aside an old towel you don’t use anymore for your paint excess. Trust me on this.

4. When you first start painting, you’re going to think that those little tubes of oil paint are only going to last you one, maybe two paintings. You will use too much at once thinking you are doing yourself a favor so you don’t have to keep refilling the palate. You will be wrong. As long as you’ve prepped the canvas and it’s nice and Moist™️ I swear that a little paint will generally go a long way.

5. Gesso is fancy and expensive but I’ve never found myself in a bind without it, so as long as you buy enough titanium white and wet your brush with a tiny bit of thinner first, your canvas prep will be *chefs kiss*

6. BUY. GOOD. BRUSHES.

7. SERIOUSLY.

8. Full disclosure, I acrylic painted for about a year and a half before I decided to try oil painting and I thought I’d be clever and use my all purpose brushes, which is fine in a bind, but they are very. Very soft. And soft.... does not cut it with oil painting. I have since bought stiffer brushes and they are my favorite things. So if in doubt and you’re buying supplies for the first time, I recommend Master’s Touch brand, which are generally not very expensive but good quality for the money spent.

9. Probably less important if you’re patient and willing to deal with it, but a steady easel does wonders for your state of mind when painting. Not having to hold onto the edge of the painting to keep it steady makes it much easier and more relaxing to paint. The downside is these are expensive af so I do not know the comfort of this and live in fear that my easel will fall over at literally any minute.

10. Save your floor! If you don’t have a floor that’s easy to mop like I do, make sure the surrounding area is covered because oil paint will splatter on the floor like you wouldn’t believe.

Technique:

(I’m not an expert clearly, so this is just things that help me as an amateur who is only doing this as a sort of therapy exercise. For serious advice pls pls reach out to someone who knows wtf they’re doing bc that is not me)

1. Watch tutorials. Before, so you know what to expect. During, so you have a point of reference. And after, to see where you went wrong and how you can improve. Bob Ross is of course fantastic, and I also like to watch MazArtStudio on YouTube, as she does some really beautiful landscape tutorials.

2. Everyone does something different with their technique, so figure out what works for you. Try different brushes and different styles, different types of paintings (I stick to landscapes because there’s more blending and I suck at doing any sort of precision work) so just try different things and find something that vibes with you.

3. Be careful how you hold brushes and knives. It’s easy to make something look messy if you’re holding the brush at a more narrow angle to the canvas, so if you’re following a tutorial step by step, pay close attention to how they hold their brushes and knives. I swear it helps.

4. The palate knife. The heckin palate knife. May or may not be your best friend. Definitely needs the devil beat out of it on principle alone. Bob explains it a little bit a more detailed tutorial on how to use that specific knife is better if it’s your first time trying to use it. My best personal advice is give yourself plenty of room on your palate to spread the paint, make sure it’s t h i n and scrape just a little roll onto the edge. Don’t just scoop up some paint and try to flatten it on the canvas: that probably won’t work. It’s frustrating and annoying but eventually you’ll get a feel for it and it might make it easier to use and handle.

5. The sky is where you’ll start generally, and I like to take my colors and paint in figure-8 motions, especially when I start blending a sunset or something together. It just looks nice and it’s an easy way to make the painting look less flat (in my amateur opinion)

6. Clouds are the worst in my opinion, and I suck at them. However, they’re pretty so if you’re going to do them, I find it easier to use a rounded brush and make more whimsical, round clouds (especially if I’m not striving for hyper realism)

7. Water is my favorite thing to do because it’s just... so nice. When I paint something I almost always have water in it, but be not afraid!! Water is not always blue!! I always take whatever color I have on top for the sky, drop to the bottom of the canvas, and paint from mid-canvas to the bottom in even, vertical strokes. So if you’re doing a sunset and you have yellow in the very center at the top, drop it down and do vertical strokes of that same color at the bottom. After you’ve copied the top to the bottom in vertical strokes (the direction of the strokes is important) take your (clean, and slightly damp with thinner if you’re me and have no patience) brush and blend the colors in even, horizontal, side to side, strokes. It makes the water look like it’s moving and it’s just. I love it. (Also, I like to go back and dab a brush in a little bit of white and do some white spots randomly through the water and blend that the same way, just to look more like reflection of the sun)

8. Trees!!!! Tress can be hard!!! But don’t lose hope, it’s fine, everything is fine. My best advice with trees is probably use a thin brush to make a line where you want your tree, then go back and add the limbs and leaves with a fan brush. I find it easier to start out from the top and hold the fan so that it’s vertical, and as soon as your tree starts getting thicker, flip it so it’s horizontal and just dab the brush against the canvas from side to side on the line (I don’t know how to describe it the way I do it but I do some variation of what Bob does, just less pretty.)

9. Not really a technique just a pet peeve, but if you’re giving a painting to someone or you’re hanging it up, and it’s a stretched canvas (meaning there’s canvas on the edges too) please please PLEASE paint the edges. I hate when I forget that and I hang something up and realize that the edges are white with very noticeable paint at the very edge. So do yourself a service and do that, especially if you’re someone who’s easily bothered by details like that.

And I guess that’s it from me!! I’ve only ever painted landscapes so I have no advice for portraits or anything else. Also, like I said, I’m not a professional, I’ve never taken a single art class, so take my opinions with a grain of salt because I’m really just shouting into the void here.

To prove how not a professional I am and also to flex that I indeed do watch Bob Ross tutorials, here’s some of the things I’ve painted, from oldest to most recent.

As you can see..... I do not qualify as someone to give advice, so these are just my opinions on what I think works for me so feel free to disregard this as you will lmao.

[p1] Hey witty, I just need some advice. If this is too much, feel free to ignore it but it's about writing. I'm a loud, outgoing individual who is very sure of themselves but when it comes to writing I struggle a lot with confidence. I love to write, but i'm such a critical person when it comes to art in general & i'm MUCH harsher with my own work than other peoples. I post a chapter & reread it a hundred times & see so many things I didn't see before: mistakes, poorly written sentences...

Confidence in anything is definitely something that comes with time. That goes for writing, art, crafts, and really any sort of hobby. Anything that you have to practice. I’ve never been in your exact situation, as I’ve somewhat always been confident in my writing? Or at least proud of it. Even when I look back at where I was five years ago, NOW I cringe at it because I’ve come so far, but AT THE TIME, I was proud of it. And in a way, I still am. I do have doubts, and I question my writing a lot if my head isn’t in the right place, but I kind of have an.... almost “fuck it” attitude?? Like.... “fuck it, post it” kinda deal. My head may be full of doubts bc I’m not feeling right, but I trust my writing ability. I trust that my writing will be okay even if my head isn’t. Kinda like muscle memory? That’s probably what ghost writing has taught me, bc I often just turn off my brain when I work for that. 

I also can’t relate to the editing fiend thing because, lmao, I hate editing with such a passion. If I’ve written it, my brain has such a hard time focusing on it again. Even if it’s to read back through it to make sure it sounds right. 

Maybe this post I reblogged a couple days ago will help? I couldn’t have put it better than Terry Crews does. Don’t judge yourself while you’re writing. Judgement will halt your creative flow. 

Maybe also like... one of the things that can help you is the fanfiction format? Like, with fanfics, we post one chapter at a time. Once a chapter is up, it’s up. It’s done. It’s out. Don’t dwell on it. Even if you read through it and find things you could’ve done better, things you want to improve on, don’t do it in that chapter. That chapter is done. Just make notes for yourself in the future. Things you wanna focus on or do better in the next chapter. Focus forward. Not backwards. Learn from what you’ve done and carry it forwards with you. 

Also this video has helped me a lot. It’s also helped Sora, when she’s in a rut and I’m trying to drag her out of it. I remind her, and myself: finished, not perfect. What matters is you’re doing it. And by doing it, you’re learning. You’re getting better. 

I also want you to remember that your “ultimate potential” is a flexible thing, and ultimately doesn’t exist. Your potential, as a living and breathing person, is to always be able to improve. Creative practices are never static. You will never reach your ultimate potential because your ultimate potential is always beyond what you’re doing right now. You may look up to me, but I haven’t reached my ultimate potential either. I’m always improving. My writing style is always shifting. Always learning. Always growing. I think the reason why I’ve always been confident in my writing is because I’ve known it’s the best I could do in that moment. It’s why I can look back, and even though I cringe at old writing, I can still be proud of it because I know I worked really hard and it was the best I could do at the time. 

You’re holding yourself to the expectations of a future idealistic version of you, instead of letting yourself be proud of what the current you can and is accomplishing. No writing is ever perfect, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be proud of what we’ve done. This was a long answer, but I hope some of it can help you

1. What age did you begin getting into art? Why did you get into it? hmmmmm im gonna try to answer this as interestingly as i can. so ive been drawing all my life and i think it was just bc a) there was always art supplies lying around and b) i just had so many things in my head and wanted a way to express them or just get them out. like when i played with my toys i was always completely quiet bc i was imagining everything in my head. sound/speech/words just weren’t as interesting to me as a way to put my thoughts out there as visuals were. also i rly liked ranma 1/2 and wanted to draw it.

4. Do you make merchandise? Favorite kind of merch to make? i don’t. i did think about making charms once, even if just for myself. you know, those cute, chibi-esque ones everybody makes? then i remembered i couldn’t draw sth cute if you put a gun to my head.

5. Who/what are your art inspirations? I listed some of my favorite artists the last time i answered questions like this so i guess this time i’ll go with the ‘what’ rather than the ‘who’. to me, the most inspiring thing are atmospheres. it could be a garbage container with 1000 stickers stuck and half-way teared down on it. the way the colors and rips in the stickers look and how it adds to the mood of the location. or sometimes it’s listening to a certain song at a certain time in a certain place that creates a unique mood and inspires you. but looking at art has never been an inspiration. so there’s that.

6. What is something (a technique, behaviorism, etc.) that you do with drawing that you think is unique to you?

ok but in seriousness, i don’t think there’s anything. any uniqueness comes from a lack of skill and knowledge so i don’t think it’s worth mentioning. like what do you even want me to say?? that i edit pictures i drew in clip studio in ms paint?? bc i do.

7. Describe your style. What would you change? neither here nor there. i feel like you can tell i’m a bit scatterbrained bc my drawings always look like they were done without any kind of direction lmao.. in general, i’d like to draw more realistically. i’d like to look at my own drawings and think ‘this pose looks rly natural, the way the clothes fit, the way the face looks, the perspective, the way this character interacts with the environment; it all looks right’. i’d also like to be able to use colors better but it’s hard when you struggle to name more than 3.

8. How do you get out of an art block? well, usually, I don’t. i’m pretty sure i’ve been in one for the past 3 years or so lmao (lamenting my anguish online) but i’ve been told that just working through it is the best way to go. just drawing. even if you hate everything. future you will thank you for it, bc you’ll probably be learning things while doing so, even if you can’t see it at that moment.

9. Does your style reflect who you are visually or your personality? both tbh. if you saw a pic of myself next to a drawing of proto danny you’d definitely see a resemblance in a way. (things like the clothes i draw him in are a given i think. ive probably drawn 90% of my wardrobe at this point) but my personality too. the things i spend more time on while drawing, the colors i choose, the mood in my drawings. that’s all a part of me. im pretty sure my oc tags are fairly accurate documentation of my mood swings and general attitude towards life throughout time lmao also, this thing i summed up in my tags a few years ago

What do you find hardest about drawing? actually drawing said ideas. look, the moment i sketch the idea down it’s already 50% worse than i imagined it, then when i go to actually draw the thing it turns into sth so bad that i can’t even come up with a forced joke about the scenario. but anyway, lately the thing that scares me the most about drawing (and why i can hardly do it) is heads. heads heads heads. faces faces faces. i just cant do it man lmao

What is your goal with art in life? my goal is to get a better hobby and to never have to return to drawing ever again. but that’s wishful thinking. i guess it’ll always stay my biggest hobby but i’d consider my life a failure if it ever turned into a career.

Advice to give to beginning artists? draw your ideas. never limit your creativity bc you don’t have the skill to express it to its full extent. a crappily drawn picture that conveys a cool idea or creates a cool atmosphere is just as good as an expertly crafted painting that has a lame subject. there’s a reason ppl admire the mona lisa but would rather read 90s manga than stare at that portrait all day. god. i guess motivational speaker is another career that’s out of the question lmao but you get what i mean!!

Here I want to share why I enjoy this fandom so much, why I've been clinging to it for so long and my opinion on the current ‘disk-horse’

I discovered hetalia when I was in middle school. That was a rough time because middle school is where dreams go to DIE! I wanted something to myself that I could watch in the morning before school and voila! I found reposted hetalia art on Pinterest and I fell in love! I didn't know what it was but the characters looked so fun and colorful so I did some research.

The first episode of the hell show sent me into a cringe stroke, what the fresh fuck did I just watch??? But the end theme enticed me to watch more. And watch I did! Since the episodes were 5-7 minutes, I would watch an epidote or two before heading to school! I’d have my ‘me time’, smiling along to a silly show. However, I was a smart kid. I fully understood what the show was meant to be about but I didn't care because I enjoyed the characters, not the war stuff. I wasn't in the fandom at its prime so I wasn't here for the “ship wars” I hate that I had to type that

I started my blog about 2 years go now, wow, just cause I thought it would be fun to write for my favorite characters! I don't think I've ever once ‘glorified nazism’ or ‘praised nazi Germany’ EVER. in my posts or in my personal life, because I have common sense. 

I haven't watched hetalia in three years. I stick around because I love to write and I love these characters! And its the easiest for me to write about characters who I’m passionate about! I’ve met so many wonderful people over the past 2 years because of this fandom! Ive had the opportunity to write for/with fantastic people and create all the time! These guys are 50-5000(?) years old! And they’re immortal! There are endless situations where you could put these characters and thats another reason why I love this fandoms much! You can write about parties in the 1800s or pirates or literally anything fun and historical and it'll be a great time! I have endless WIPs of historic pieces that I couldn't get around to finishing but I just got a huge burst of inspiration and decided to run straight here to share my ideas with all you lovely people :)

There is problematic material in the very old strips but we don't have to dig that back up. Its dead! Leave it be! Because we have enough new/fanmade material to keep us going for awhile! We just have to support new blogs and new creators :) Quit smashing that like button so hard and give creators a reblog, jeez

yes!! i adore Heat Waves and Helium, i am very invested in the story. months ago, i was actually working on a Heat Waves animation, but i never finished it. i don’t think i could go back and finish it now though, i’ve improved since then and looking at my old art kinda makes me cringe lmao. i’ve planned a few Helium drawings and never got around to them, but i’m certain i’ll be doing something for Helium at some point. i’m too in love with it not to <33

1. Sam vs Dean. like. Kinda fucked that they keep saying that Dean wants out and Sam is slowly going like "nah fuck it this is pretty cool" and then keep undoing that. Also kinda fucked how much they imply that they wouldn't be friends, and how it's mostly because they keep crossing their wires(dean goes drinking Sam goes...I don't know, I don't think he makes much of an effort actually)

2. Dean. No fuck it because even though the kid was Sam Coded(magic, straight A's) he clearly was someone Dean felt connected to(music, general Vibe). Like the kid wanted fun, and so does Dean, and he hates the plan. Also I got the vibe that Gary was the oldest so..yeah no that tracks. The difference here is that Dean wants something quiet, wants a family, doesn't want to hunt, which is...also against the plan, so it's kinda like that. Also, I think the whole "Dean's incredibly lonely" comes back, because he's...bad at socializing due to both the "I have to perform this role" and he didn't get a lot of interaction with other people, and his brother doesn't seem to like him. Like Dean is always just spectacularly lonely and Ouch

3. Sam. Listen I get the "rebel against your family" but Sam...that's a youngest child privilege. Like if you've got this plan, and you can't do anything that deviates from that plan anywhere. Like I get it, you were Smart and Magic, but this was like..Sam accepts hunting, he likes it, he's good at it. He doesn't want out anymore, and he's willing to rebel. it was like...good way to set it up. youngest child swaps with oldest. yes

4. Escapism again. Dean and the kid are craving it(I keep saying the kid, it's Gary), and they get a little taste of what it's like. Sam gets it and hates it, which tracks with the office episode.

5. needledrop. ok the "rock n roll never forgets" seems important to the like...stuck-ness of Dean, but also it was used in the episode as like...Dean Music that the kid likes, but Sam doesn't, subtly "They're different"

same with the salad and the "drinking together" sam's straight laced on purpose, I think he's just Like That and it's hard for them? Like I feel like it plays into the fact that without hunting they...probably wouldn't be close

6. overall, it was like...a funny, solid character study, playing off of established lore, with good stuff all around. It was more lighthearted, but well shot, and funny. Like finally! they didn't beat me over the head with the message! good!!!
